Camp History
Camp Kydnie has a unique history based
on the vision of Dr. Oscar Oberkircher, a pediatric nephrologist
at Geisinger Medical Center. He knew that children with
kidney disease needed a chance to be together in fun and
friendship. As a member of the Board of Directors of Camp
Victory, a special needs camp in Millville, Pennsylvania,
Dr. "O" knew that in just a short time there
would be a place to take "his kids."
Camp Kydnie became a reality in 1992. It began as a day camp full of games, hay rides, arts and crafts, fishing, and great food. The children and their families had a wonderful time and all went home wearing exhausted smiles! In 1993, the kids came back to camp once again for a day of fun and laughter.
In 1994, Camp Kydnie had its first overnight
camping experience. With swimming, fishing, archery and
much more, there was never a dull moment. Parents were
encouraged by their children's independence even with
just one night's stay. Happily, 1996 saw the expansion
of camp to a week, providing even more fun and independence.
The summer of 1998 brought us a new challenge as we geared-up to provide a camping experience for children in need of dialysis treatment. Our Med Shed staff was ready to provide this service. We are excited to include more of these children in our program.
In 2007, Camp Kydnie celebrated its fifteenth
birthday.
The facilities at Camp Victory have evolved to accommodate different activities and adventures to make our camp a memorable experience. The facility includes an arts and crafts pavilion, a fishing pond, a screened in games pavilion, an open-air chapel and a wheelchair accessible tree house. Additionally, the facility includes a low ropes course, climbing wall, volleyball and basketball courts, and fields for kick ball, softball and other games. Other outside activities include swimming, campfires and tent-camping.
The camp staff staff includes experienced counselors, support staff and a med shed staff that includes a pediatric nephrologist. The medical staff is available twenty-four hours a day. All staff volunteers out of love for the children and Camp Kydnie. |
